To complete the Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation or Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering courses, cadets are required to undergo 12 months Training onboard ocean-going vessel which is equivalent to forty (40) credit units. This program is placed on their 4th year to enhance their knowledge and skills during theoretical period and provides all the cadets the opportunity to use a ship as a sea going laboratory wherein they are required to complete their Training Record Book. Generally, it is undertaken if the cadet has completed the three year academic requirement and wants to acquire BSMT or BSMARE degree.


Onboard Training or Shipboard Training is a mandatory minimum requirement for every candidate for certification as officer in charge of a Navigational watch ships of 500 gross tonnage or more and for every officer in charge of an engineering watch in a manned engine – room or as designated duty engineer in a periodically unmanned engine –room of ships powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 KW or more. Shipboard Training Pertains to the seagoing service covered by Regulations II/1 and III/1 of the 1978 STCW Convention and Sections A-II/1 and A- III/1 of the STCW Code.
